Battle of Bunker Hill; A Veterans Day Speech
Editor’s Note: Here is a speech David Cloft will be giving to a room full of school children. Give it a look.

Today I want to take you on a journey back in time, a time when our nation was just beginning to take shape. It was a time of immense challenge and bravery. It was the time of the Battle of Bunker Hill, a pivotal moment in our history that teaches us powerful lessons about the cost of freedom, standing up against overwhelming odds, and the extraordinary bravery of those who dared to defy tyranny.
Picture this: it’s the year 1775, and the American colonies are under the rule of the mighty British Empire. The colonists were growing weary of British tyranny. They were tired of being taxed heavily without a voice in those decisions. They were tired of British soldiers being quartered in their homes. They were tired of trade restrictions and limited self-governance.
They were tired of being denied basic freedoms. But what did they do in the face of such a daunting challenge? They did something extraordinary. They stood up against a much larger, more powerful force. They stood up because they believed in something greater than themselves. They believed in the idea that freedom was worth any cost.
The Battle of Bunker Hill is a vivid example of the cost of freedom. The colonists knew they would pay a high price for their defiance, but they were willing to pay it. They knew that freedom was priceless, and that sometimes you have to fight for it. Imagine, they were facing one of the most formidable armies in the world, the British Army, and yet they chose to stand their ground.
The colonists were outnumbered, outgunned, and faced seemingly insurmountable odds. But they refused to back down. They showed immense bravery in the face of fear. They showed us that when you believe in something with all your heart, you can find the courage to stand tall even in the darkest of moments.
As the battle raged on, the order was given, ‘Don’t fire until you see the whites of their eyes.’ This wasn’t just a tactic to conserve ammunition; it was a testament to the resolve of the colonists. They were determined to make every shot count because they understood that freedom was not something to be taken lightly. It was something to be fought for, and they were willing to give everything they had.
In the end, the colonists didn’t win that battle, but they sent a powerful message. They showed the world that they were not going to be pushed around, that they were willing to pay the price for freedom, no matter how high that price might be.
So, my friends, remember the story of the Battle of Bunker Hill. Remember the immense cost of freedom, the courage it takes to stand up against a bigger threat, and the incredible bravery of those who faced overwhelming odds. Remember that we stand on the shoulders of those who were willing to sacrifice for our freedom.
And most importantly, remember that you too can make a difference, that you too can stand up for what you believe in, no matter how big the challenge may seem. Because, just like those brave colonists, you have the spirit, the courage, and the heart to make a difference. The cost of freedom is high, but the reward is immeasurable. Thank you.
