Donald Trump: Weak on Gun Rights

During his presidency, Donald Trump’s stance on gun rights and his actual actions often diverged, creating a notable contrast between his vocal support for the Second Amendment and the impact of his administration’s policies. Despite his outspoken advocacy for gun rights, Trump’s tenure witnessed several actions that raised concerns among pro-gun groups.

While Trump frequently expressed unwavering support for the Second Amendment, his administration implemented a ban on bump stocks, devices that modify semiautomatic rifles to mimic fully automatic fire. This decision followed the tragic 2017 Las Vegas shooting, where bump stocks were used, leading to criticisms from some gun rights advocates who viewed this as an encroachment on Second Amendment rights.

Additionally, Trump’s administration suggested openness to certain measures such as enhanced background checks and raising the minimum age for purchasing firearms. These proposals faced scrutiny within the pro-gun community, with some perceiving them as potentially restrictive and not in line with Trump’s previous vocal support for gun rights.

Moreover, despite having a Republican-controlled Congress for a portion of his presidency, Trump’s administration did not significantly advance measures to expand or reinforce gun rights at the federal level. The lack of substantial legislative action during his tenure raised questions about the depth of his commitment to advancing gun rights, despite his rhetorical support.

The disconnect between Trump’s public statements advocating for gun rights and the policies enacted during his presidency led to criticisms from both sides of the gun debate. While he consistently voiced support for the Second Amendment, some within the pro-gun community viewed his administration’s actions, such as the bump stock ban and the absence of proactive steps to bolster gun rights, as falling short of expectations. Consequently, Trump’s presidency left a legacy where his rhetoric on gun rights often clashed with the practical implications of his administration’s policies.

  1. We have over 10 million illegal immigrants with an open border that we do not know who is in our country, interest rates at 8-9% that prevents many from buying homes, high inflation, our main ally Israel under attack, war in the Ukraine, probable war in Taiwan, missing Defense Secretary, senile president, and other problems to numerous to mention.
We have the Dems using the courts and prosecutions to prevent Donald Trump from running for president, which is unprecedented and dangerous.
Donald Trump has to fight the Dem prosecutors, Dem courts, and Dem Secretaries of State who want to remove him from the ballots.
This will be the most important election in our memory, with Trump against a senile puppet controlled by who knows.
Given all this, this author focuses on bump stocks to damage Trump’s candidacy? Why? Trump did not have a Republican majority. He had Rino Paulie Ryan as Speaker of the House for two years. At least Pelosi stabbed Trump up front, Ryan stabbed Trump in the back.
Another silly pretentious article worthy of Lynn Cheney and Mitt Romney.

  2. More gibberish, David T. Cloft. Conservatives aren’t activists. The 2nd Amendment is clear. The President doesn’t need to advance pro-2nd Amendment legislation. The President needs to stop the encroachment on the 2nd Amendment protections. It does not follow that not doing something necessarily means you want the opposite to happen. That is utterly illogical. Trump helped protect and support our rights as expressed in the 2nd Amendment. I can’t wait for your next column criticizing Brandon and the Democrat 2nd Amendment haters. I’ll wait.

    • I agree, Eagle.
If Congress starts passing laws defining the Second A, it is a dangerous slippery slope.
There was not much litigation on the Second A until recently, and the Courts have generally been favorable.
Also, Trump was busy with trying to find money to build the wall, reducing taxes, negotiating the trade deals, and responding to the unfounded Russia hoax charges. As you stated, Trump had the legislation to repeal Obamacare but then Thumbs Down McCain sided with the Dems. During the last two years he had to deal with a Dem House.
