Immigration: Keeping Our Doors Unlocked at Night

Why should immigration and control of our borders be any different than the common sense task of locking the doors to our homes at night or when we leave? Up in Texas on the farm, the Stump Ranch, we were a “keep the doors unlocked family.”  But that was not the case with the gates to the pastures.  Those were always locked.  It was our duty as kids to check that the gates were locked.

One would close the gate, wrap the chain, latch the lock, and pull it to ensure it was closed.  When we went back to the car, our dad would make us return to the lock and check it again.  Depending on his mood, and our attitude, this process could be repeated multiple times.  Checking the damned lock so many times probably accounts for my attitude but let that go.  I have never failed to lock a door upon leaving an area I control.

Back to the gates, my dad knew that cows and calves were money, so he was not going to lose any money.  As far as keeping the home unlocked, he probably figured he could always make another kid.

My friend’s families were a keep the doors unlocked as well.  One asked permission to enter.  People respected the home of others.  Everyone understood a basic principle that a person had the unalienable right to defend one’s castle.  Neighbors watched out for other neighbors; they took time to meet new neighbors.  There were no break-ins.

Most neighborhoods have become a “Lock Your Door” area.  It was a slow evolution.  There were not massive gates, security cameras or huge signs, just friendly reminders that you needed permission to enter.   But as time continued to pass, the friendly reminders did become cameras, gates with massive locks, guard dogs and security employees.  Sadly, there are probably only a few areas left in this great Nation where there are no locks.

I wonder how much of that shift was due to the change in the castle theory.  Once, each man’s home was his castle and he was entitled to defend that castle against all intruders.   Yes, some tragedies happened under that policy, however, many more tragedies have happened since that castle policy was terminated.

The same transformation has occurred along the border.  Growing up, it was easy to enter Mexico.  At the border crossing, parents or grandparents showed a driver’s license and in you went.  The leather shops on the border offered an excellent opportunity to purchase new bridles, saddles, and even custom-made boots.  Taco and enchilada push carts provided an inexpensive and tasty meal, washed down with a watermelon or cantaloupe infused water.  And then it was time to return home.

The same happened in reverse for the Rio Grande area was a Garden of Eden with respect to cantaloupe, watermelons, grapefruit, and honeydew melons.  Seasonal laborers would cross the Mexican border, tirelessly work the harvest circuit, and then return home with a pocket full of cash.  There was hardly ever an issue.  Texas and Mexico were great neighbors.   Both sides of the border followed the Law.

Throughout the history of this Nation, immigration has been encouraged.  Immigrants would knock on the front door and ask permission to enter.  If they passed the medical examination and they had a sponsor, they were allowed to come in.  During the Civil War, enlistment requirements were enforced at the various ports of entrée, as recruits escaping the potato famine of Ireland, went to fight with new clothes.

An immigrant had only three options upon entering this Nation:  return home, die trying or success.  There were no government handouts, no magnets, no safety nets.  There was only the promise of faith, family, and freedom.  That was it.    Sounds very harsh, but it created the strength in character that made this Nation great.

That policy changed with the 1965 when Senator Teddy Kennedy had his immigration bill passed due to sympathetic legislation following the assassination of his brother.  This allowed individuals to seek admission, even if they shared none of the concepts of freedom that made this Nation great.  In addition, magnets were created to encourage immigrants to come to this Nation.

There is one basic truth regarding immigration; immigration is for the benefit of the Nation, not the individuals.  Immigration has nothing to do with the individual!  Harsh?  Not really, the history of mankind is selfish regarding immigration, for immigration policies must improve the condition of the Nation.  Immigration is intended to improve the “national” identity of the Nation.

The immigration policies of this Nation have resulted in the most diverse population in the history of mankind.  Immigration takes time!  That time is required for a person and family to assimilate, to become American citizens, and to share the responsibilities of being an American.

Over the past decades, the drive to promote assimilation has been pushed to the backseat of the immigration issue.  Now there are even more magnets as the United States promises to be a welfare state for anyone, regardless of whether there is a desire to become a contributing member of the American family.  Immigration policies have morphed from being pro-Nation to being pro-immigrant.

Today, we no longer secure our borders.  We are being invaded.  We have opened the gates of the castle, we have unlocked the doors, we no longer protect our family.  It is wrong!

We need to be consistent.  If you are a believer in the Rule of Law and you understand the need to keep your doors locked, then promote closing the border.  Promote assimilation!

But if you are a marxist progressive Democrat who believes that everyone has a right to enter this Nation (understanding of course your desire to create additional voters), then as supporters of this invasion, you must keep the doors of your homes UNLOCKED at all times.  You must allow anyone to come into your home unannounced and use the bathroom, take a nap, prepare a meal, steal some clothes, take a bath, or even eat some select ice cream from a special freezer.  You have a duty to be consistent.  Do not ignore the illegal “open border” policy while you keep your home locked.  It is a poor example. Why should immigration and control of our borders be any different than the common sense task of locking the doors to our homes at night or when we leave.
