Free Indeed!

Freedom!! Isn’t it great to be an American? We’ve been free from political tyranny for nearly 250 years! Sure, our nation has problems–big problems. Politics, the economy, violence, drugs, terrorism–the list is endless.
But are we free? We have the freedoms of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. We are free to worship when and where we choose. We are guaranteed freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, and freedom of the press! We are able to chase the American dream! We can do what we want!
But here’s the irony, according to writer Nathan Nass from “The Upside-Down Savior”: “We think that the more we can do what we want, the freer we are. We say: ‘It’s a free country, so I can do whatever I want!’ Do you know where that thought started? In the Garden of Eden. With a snake.”
Nass continues:

“People in America aren’t really free. Just look around: Bitter partisanship and anger—is that freedom? The constant struggle to have more money and stuff—is that freedom? The fear of death that leads people to spend whatever possible just to stay alive a little longer—is that freedom? Pride over sin parading through the streets—is that freedom? Here’s something we need to understand: You can live in the U.S. and still not be free.”

The freedom that we should be seeking lies beyond our Founding Fathers. Beyond our Declaration of Independence. Beyond our glorious flag. Beyond any Presidential election or Supreme Court ruling. Indeed, the freedom that we seek is the freedom that was promised to us by Jesus over 2000 years ago.
Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin…[but] if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” (John 8:34,36)
Let’s celebrate our nation’s freedom this week. Let’s have a picnic! Let’s shoot those fireworks! Let’s joy every moment of the holiday while we celebrate the freedoms that we have as Americans.
But, more importantly, let’s look beyond the flag and let’s listen to Jesus: “If you hold to My teaching, you are really My disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31-32)

Celebrate your true freedom!
