There is something mildly humiliating about looking at a modern LiDAR image of Fort Wayne in Detroit.
We live in an age where my phone can tell me where I am within a few feet, calculate the distance to a restaurant, show me satellite imagery, and probably remind me that I haven’t closed my exercise ring. Modern surveyors have GPS, robotic total stations, laser rangefinders, computers, CAD, drones, and instruments accurate enough to tell whether a mosquito landed on the property corner.
Then you look at Fort Wayne.
Built beginning in the 1840s.
And the damn thing looks like somebody drew it in AutoCAD yesterday.
Perfectly arranged bastions. Long straight walls. Matching angles. Geometric relationships stretching across acres of terrain. Except the men who laid it out didn’t have satellites orbiting 12,000 miles above them.
They had chains.
And math.
This naturally leads the modern internet toward its favorite conclusion:
Aliens. Freemasons. Secret geometry. Possibly all three.
Before firing up the History Channel soundtrack, however, the real explanation may actually be more impressive.
The engineers who designed works like Fort Wayne weren’t technologically primitive. Their technology was simply mechanical rather than electronic. By the middle of the nineteenth century, professional surveyors possessed remarkably accurate transits, theodolites, measuring chains, levels, calibrated rods and astronomical instruments.
More importantly, they knew how to use them.
A surveyor didn’t need to measure every point independently. Establish an accurate baseline, measure precise angles from known locations, and geometry does the rest. Triangulation allows enormous areas to be laid out from relatively few carefully established points.
Then you check your work.
Then check it again.
If you survey around a closed geometric figure and don’t arrive where mathematics says you should, congratulations: somebody screwed up. Find the error and do it again.
No batteries required.
This was especially important with military fortifications because that beautiful star-shaped geometry wasn’t primarily decorative.
It was about killing people.
Which, historically, has been an outstanding motivator for advances in engineering.
The bastioned fort developed because tall medieval walls and cannon didn’t play particularly well together. Engineers needed lower, stronger works with overlapping fields of fire. Those strange projecting points allowed defenders to fire along neighboring walls and into areas that otherwise would have been protected from direct fire.
What looks like sacred geometry from 500 feet above the ground is really an enormous nineteenth-century weapons-engagement diagram.
Every angle had a job.
Now we arrive at the fun part.
What about the Freemasons?
There actually is a connection between Freemasonry and geometry. That’s not conspiracy theory.
Look at the symbolism: the square and compasses. Masonry borrowed heavily from the tools and traditions of builders. The square, level, plumb and cornerstone all became symbols carrying moral and philosophical meanings. Geometry represented order, proportion and a universe that could be understood through reason.
Plenty of important Americans were Freemasons, including military officers and political leaders.
So when somebody notices elaborate geometry in nineteenth-century American architecture and says, “Hey, this looks Masonic,” he’s not necessarily wearing a tinfoil hat.
Maybe just carrying one in his truck.
The problem begins when we reverse the evidence.
Freemasons valued geometry.
Military engineers used geometry.
Therefore military engineers secretly designed forts according to Masonic geometry.
That’s where we need documentation.
The star-fort concept predates Fort Wayne by centuries and developed from very practical military requirements. Engineers weren’t hiding mystical symbols in the landscape when an explanation involving artillery, fields of fire and defensive architecture already explains the shape beautifully.
Could individual engineers have been Masons? Certainly.
Could Masonic intellectual culture have overlapped with the mathematical and architectural culture of the period? Absolutely.
Does that mean Fort Wayne is secretly a giant Masonic symbol visible only after mankind invented airplanes and LiDAR?
Easy there, Indiana Jones.
What fascinates me more is what these structures say about the people who actually built them.
We sometimes assume technology created intelligence.
It didn’t.
Technology increased the speed with which intelligent people can accomplish things.
A nineteenth-century military engineer armed with a pencil, straightedge, compass, logarithmic tables, surveying instruments and an education heavy in geometry could perform calculations that most of us would immediately surrender to a computer.
Then crews took those calculations into a field and transferred them onto the actual Earth.
Today we fly over their work with lasers and computers and discover that the bastion is still where the math said it should be nearly two centuries ago.
That’s incredible.
So maybe Fort Wayne doesn’t prove that Freemasons secretly encoded America with sacred geometry.
It proves something arguably more disturbing to the modern ego:
The old guys were really freaking good at math.
And their batteries never died.
