If Colonel Townsend Whelen Had an iPhone

Colonel Townsend Whelen famously said:

“Only accurate rifles are interesting.”

Whelen died in 1961.

The 6.5 Creedmoor showed up roughly 46 years later, in 2007.

ChatGPT showed up another 15 years after that.

Which raises an important historical question:

What would Colonel Whelen have done if somebody handed him my iPhone?

I suspect he would have stared suspiciously at it for about thirty seconds, asked why the telephone didn’t have a cord, and then immediately typed:

Find the ultimate “Best accuracy load. 6.5 Creedmoor. 140-grain Berger Hybrid. H4350. Gas gun. Go.”

And somewhere, a century’s worth of handwritten loading notebooks would spontaneously burst into flames.

Long-range high-power rifle shooting has always been a balancing act. A barrel only has so much life. Every round you burn experimenting with loads is one less round of useful barrel life available for actually shooting matches.

Traditionally, finding the magic combination involved manuals, notebooks, chronographs, conversations behind the firing line, questionable advice from guys named Bob, Al or Howard, and approximately 147 Internet forum posts where everyone insists their load shoots “quarter minute all day if I do my part.”  Liars All!

Then you start testing.

Powder charge. Seating depth. Velocity. Standard deviation. Vertical dispersion.

Shoot. Measure. Adjust.

Repeat until either the rifle shoots or the barrel becomes another expensive tomato stake.

So, after 41 years of competitive shooting, I tried something different.

I asked ChatGPT for a starting point for my 6.5 Creedmoor load.

It did not disappoint.

In fact, it produced one of the best first-attempt load developments I’ve ever fired.

That leaves me with an uncomfortable question.

Was it luck?

Or did a computer essentially digest decades of published loading data, competitive-shooting experience, technical discussions, and the collective ramblings of thousands of rifle nerds—and point me toward the neighborhood where the rifle was probably going to be happy?

Probably a little of both.

AI doesn’t pull the trigger. It doesn’t read the wind. It doesn’t build the ammunition. It doesn’t replace a chronograph, careful testing, or the guy behind the rifle, or a 1956 loading manual that doesn’t even have any load for a 6.5 Creed.

It’s just another tool.

A remarkably useful one.

And somewhere in Rifleman Heaven, I like to imagine Colonel Whelen looking at a tiny group fired from a 6.5 Creedmoor, examining my phone, and finally saying:

“Only accurate rifles are interesting.”

Then asking:

“What the hell is Wi-Fi?”

Is using AI to help develop a rifle load cheating?

Hell no.

It’s not an unfair advantage if everybody else has thumbs.
